🌱The Agave Adventure
This journey is about more than just planting; it’s about cultivating a connection to the land, the plants, and the spirits that can be created from them. You see, Agave isn’t just a plant; it’s a lifestyle. From the moment we decided to plant our first Agave, we dove into a world filled with challenges, surprises, and a whole lot of learning.
🌾 The Planting Process
So, let’s talk about the planting process. We’re ready to get our hands dirty. The first step is selecting the right Agave plants. For our first batch, we opted for the Blue Weber variety, a classic choice that brings a taste of Jalisco, Mexico, right to the hills of Hollywood. These beauties will take about four more years to mature, but the wait will be worth it!
Once we source our Agave, it’s time to prep the site. Finding the right spot is crucial. Agave loves sunshine and well-drained soil. We chose a spot under the iconic Hollywood sign, with a view that could make any Agave feel like a star. But don’t be fooled; the journey isn’t just about picking the perfect location.
🌍 Creating The Perfect Home for Our Agave
So, what goes into preparing the perfect soil for Agave? The ideal mixture usually includes a blend of sandy loam, organic matter, and, of course, a little love. We realized that Agave prefers a soil that drains well, so adding rocks and coarse materials is essential. It’s like creating a cozy home for our plants!

Preparing the Soil
Soil preparation is key to a successful Agave planting as we do everything possible to put our best foot forward. We mixed succulent soil with manure and added rocks to create that sandy, rocky texture that Agave craves. It might sound simple, but trust me, it’s a bit of a chore. We learned the hard way that it’s best to have your soil pre-mixed before delivery. Who knew mixing dirt could be such a workout?

🛠️ Getting the Right Tools
Now, let’s talk tools. You can’t plant Agave without the right equipment, right Jules? We’ve got shovels and augers to help us dig holes deep enough for our new friends. But don’t forget about the essentials—like your snake boots! There’s nothing worse than realizing you’re not wearing the right gear when you’re knee-deep in dirt, and a rattlesnake appears.

As we embark on this Agave journey, we’re excited to see how our plants grow and evolve. This isn’t just about cultivating a crop; it’s about crafting a new story in the world of Agave. With every challenge we face and every lesson we learn, we’re one step closer to creating something truly special. So, let’s dig in and see where this adventure takes us!
🌄 The Journey to Fontana
What a trip! Heading out to Fontana, California, was a mix of excitement and nerves. Driving through the winding roads, it felt like we were on a mission to rescue some agave royalty. After all, we were about to adopt 900 Blue Weber agave plants from Mexico. Just imagine the stories they could tell if they could talk! And we certainly got a few stories in from Jules along the way.

🌿 Picking Up the Agave Plants
Upon arriving, the sight of those healthy, vibrant agave plants was exhilarating. Each one stood tall, ready to embark on a new chapter of its life under the Hollywood sign. It’s a beautiful moment when you realize you’re not just planting a crop; you’re nurturing a piece of culture.

🏡 Final Resting Place under the Hollywood Sign
We returned to our home, and wow, what a view! The iconic Hollywood sign looms above us, a perfect backdrop for our new agave friends. It’s like they were meant to be here, soaking up the California sun while looking out over Los Angeles.

🌍 The Perfect Spot for Agave
Choosing the right location was crucial. Agave thrives in well-drained, sandy soil, and we were lucky to find a spot that checks all those boxes. The combination of sun exposure and the slight breeze helps our plants flourish. It’s almost poetic, isn’t it? Agave plants basking in the California sun, destined for greatness.

💪 Challenges Encountered
Obstacles encountered and overcome…by Jules, not me.

Four Months Later
Take a look at us now! Although we lost a few plants to pesky gophers, hungry rabbits, and the rigors of the long journey, most of our plants look fabulous. The weather, soil amendment, and our love and care are now beginning to show the fruits of our labor.

🕷️ The Black Widow Surprise
Ah, the challenges of Agave farming! From gophers to black widows, it seems like the universe has a way of testing your resolve. Black widows, you say? Yes, they love to make their homes among the spiky leaves of our young Agave. It’s all part of the adventure, but we’re keeping our eyes peeled for those little dangers. After all, this is life or death in the Agave world!

Nature’s Obstacles

Aside from the creepy crawlies, nature has thrown a few curveballs our way. Weather changes can impact the growth of our Agave, and pests love to munch on the root bulb (I’m talking to you, Gophers). But, hey, every farmer knows that perseverance is part of the game. We’re learning as we go, adapting our methods, and finding solutions to keep our Agave thriving.
🌞 Looking Ahead
As we wrap up this stage of our journey, the excitement is palpable. Our agave will take years to mature, but the potential is immense. We’re not just growing plants; we’re cultivating a legacy right here in Hollywood. Cheers to new beginnings and the adventures that lie ahead!
