Our story is one of passion, dedication, and a dream that’s starting to come to life, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

The Beginnings: Planting Agave in the Hollywood Hills

So, let’s paint you a picture: Imagine a serene oasis nestled in the heart of the Hollywood Hills. The sun casts a golden glow over rows of vibrant agave plants stretching as far as the eye can see. This isn’t just any farm—this is the future of Mulholland Estate.

Our journey began six years ago when we bought three and a half acres of land in the Hollywood Hills. We began the the process of splitting the land, with permits and plans for new construction on the the two divided lots. As with anything, this took years. But as time went by, something unexpected happened. We found ourselves deeply attached to the property – the breathtaking views, the vibrant wildlife – it all became a part of us. The idea of breaking it apart for modern homes began to feel wrong, almost heartbreaking. Was there a better way? Could we do something truly remarkable with this beautiful canvas we had before us? The answer soon revealed itself in a burst of inspiration: why not create an extraordinary estate that we could pass down to our son and future generations? And so, we made the bold choice to keep the structure of the house and give it a fresh new look through renovation. But the question remained: what should we do with the rest of the land?

Building the Dream: From Concept to Cultivation

I’m Priti, our resident physician and researcher. When the challenge arose to find the ideal plant for our soil, I dove headfirst into the task. After extensive research, I unearthed the perfect match: agave. From that moment on, I delved deeply into understanding all there was to know about this remarkable plant and its potential to not only survive but thrive in our unique soil conditions. And Mezcal vs Tequila, what are they all made from? Agave plants…why not? While we might not be connoisseurs of alcohol, I’ve definitely had my fair share of tequila and Mezcal shots back in the day.

Jules and I reached out to the California Agave Council (who knew they existed?), and the Ortega family graciously invited us to their home in Murrieta, California. We discovered that we couldn’t make Tequila, which only comes from five states in Mexico. But we could make a distilled agave spirit.

“So, a lot of California distillers are all working together to figure out how to process this and actually make a good Agave Spirit,” Leo said. We sampled Agave Murietta, a 94-proof Agave Spirit with hints of pepper, fruit, and a little smoke. The first small batch was released in 2022 and sold out. I was blown away. Despite being 94-proof, it was incredibly clean, smooth, and easy to sip – unlike any tequila or mezcal I’ve ever tasted. From that moment on, there was no turning back. Mulholland Estate was going to happen.

Working alongside me are Jules, utilizing his construction expertise, and our son Julian, bringing in a hands-on approach to make our dream farm a reality. The synergy of our combined efforts was truly magical. Together, we meticulously laid out plans and constructed the necessary infrastructure to nurture and cultivate agave. Every single step of the way, from preparing the soil to the delicate process of planting, was executed with utmost care and precision.

Sustainability is at the heart of Mulholland Estate. We’re committed to using eco-friendly farming methods that protect and preserve our environment. From organic fertilizers to water conservation techniques, our practices ensure that we produce high-quality agave while respecting the earth.
